Craig Smith is an elected Newton-le-Willows Independents councillor for Newton-le-Willows West.
Craig has lived in Earlestown for 18 years and quickly came to value the town’s strong sense of community. He has three children who have attended, or still attend, local schools, and cares deeply about the future of Newton-le-Willows and the opportunities available for the next generation.
Before becoming a councillor, Craig worked for himself in IT and later moved into logistics. He studied Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology at university, which gave him a lasting interest in environmental issues locally, nationally and globally. His background has shaped his belief that decisions should be practical, evidence-based and made with the long-term interests of the community in mind.
Craig believes residents should have a clear voice in the decisions that affect them. He is committed to plain English, open discussion and proper consultation, especially around major issues such as Earlestown regeneration, Parkside and other developments that will shape the future of the town. He believes public money should be spent wisely, transparently and with the support of local residents.
During the 2026 election campaign, Craig made clear that no individual has all the answers, but together a community does. His approach is to listen, explain his views honestly, and be willing to change his mind when residents or evidence show a better way forward.
As part of the Newton-le-Willows Independents team, Craig is focused on fair, inclusive and accountable local politics. He is committed to working hard for residents, taking every concern seriously, and helping ensure Newton-le-Willows West has strong, visible and independent representation.
